Did anyone else find the first plate to be a complete waste of time? I did 4 receivers and used plate 1 on the first one. Not only did it waste a great deal of time but it also made the results less than desireable. Using the first plate left the finished receiver with many small grooves from the 1/8 bit all along the sides. skipping this plate saved 30-40 minutes and the sides are nice and smooth.

Nice! I look forward to trying that.

I did drill the single hole in the center at position #5 on plate 1 as shown in the Video. It isn't absolutely necessary but skipping the hole leaves a big chunk of matrerial which must br removed with the mill bit. I just marked the hole using plate 1 then removed the plate and drlled out with the 3/8 bit. After that I used the plates as normal

This is the type of discussion this forum needs!! I HIGHLY advise that anyone making their first one do EXACTLY as shown in the video. But afterwards, modify your methods and post the results in here.
By skipping the 1st plate, you're going to have more material on the side walls to remove with the endmill. If you're comfortable with that.. Then skip away. Doing this will also wear out plates 2&3 much faster.
I would still spot all the holes in plate 1 though.

jelly..... I plan to use plate #1 with 1/8 bit on my builds - so when plate #2 is used with the BIGGER bit I
won't loose controll of the jig as the holes will be "predrilled".... the extra time is worth the
completed receiver.
